Our reading time calculator estimates how long it takes to read any piece of text based on average reading speeds. This is useful for bloggers, content creators, journalists, teachers, and anyone who wants to give readers an accurate time expectation.

Average Reading Speeds

• Slow Reader (150 wpm): Children, early readers, or those reading in a second language. About 1 page per minute of a standard book.
• Average Reader (200 wpm): Most adult readers when reading silently for comprehension. This is the standard used by most blogs and articles to display "X min read".
• Fast Reader (300 wpm): Proficient adult readers who read frequently. Professional readers, academics, and avid readers often fall in this range.
• Speed Reader (400-600 wpm): Trained speed readers using techniques like chunking and skimming. Comprehension may decrease at very high speeds.

Why Add Reading Time to Content?

Showing estimated reading time on blog posts and articles has been shown to increase engagement. When readers know it only takes 3 minutes to read an article, they are more likely to start and finish it. Medium popularized this feature, and it is now standard on many major publications.
