Open any design mockup, WordPress theme demo, or web development template and you'll find it: "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit..." It's so ubiquitous in design and publishing that most people have seen it hundreds of times without ever wondering what it means or where it comes from.

The answer is surprisingly fascinating: Lorem Ipsum is scrambled Latin from a 2,000-year-old philosophical text — and it has been used as placeholder text in some form since the 1500s.

The Origin: Cicero's De Finibus, 45 BC

Lorem Ipsum is derived from "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), a philosophical treatise written by the Roman statesman and philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero in 45 BC. The work examines Epicurean, Stoic, and Platonist theories of ethics.

The standard Lorem Ipsum passage — which begins "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..." — comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of the original text. The "real" Latin begins:

"Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit..."

Which translates roughly to: "Nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain and seeks it, wants to have it, simply because it is pain..."

The Lorem Ipsum version has been jumbled, words removed, and phrases scrambled so that it resembles Latin visually but is grammatically nonsensical and unreadable as meaningful text. This is precisely the point: it looks like real text at a glance but contains no readable meaning that could distract from the visual layout being evaluated.

500 Years of Placeholder Text

Lorem Ipsum's use as filler text is often traced to the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to create a type specimen book. This was used to demonstrate different typefaces — the printer needed text that looked realistic but wouldn't distract reviewers with actual content.

It survived the leap from Gutenberg printing to desktop publishing. When Aldus Corporation launched PageMaker in 1985 (one of the first desktop publishing applications), Lorem Ipsum was included as the default placeholder text. • It's meaningless — reviewers can't get distracted by content because there is no content to engage with.

• It's neutral — unlike filler phrases like "text text text text" or "XXXX placeholder XXXX", it reads visually like natural language.

When NOT to Use Lorem Ipsum

Despite its usefulness, Lorem Ipsum is inappropriate in several situations:
